Ah, Those Special Gale-Force Moments

My vacation earlier this week in Bermuda taught me two things.

First, January is not the ideal time to visit this particular island. Between the intermittent rain, gale-force winds and temperatures in the high 50s on the Fahrenheit scale, “island life” took on an entirely different tone than what you see in the pretty beach pictures.

Second–and more important–is that I really do prefer hanging out in harbors that aren’t filled with crowds. One good thing about the seasonal weather patterns in Bermuda is that the cruise ships simply don’t pull in this time of year. My husband and I were able to explore all three of the harbors where ships dock in summer (Hamilton, Royal Naval Dockyard and St. George) without so much as the hint of a pushy shop owner or cruise-ship crowd.

It was almost as if we were on a private yacht charter, only instead of a single harbor, we had the entire island all to ourselves.

Come to think of it, I just might start looking for gale-force wind patterns as a plus in my future vacation plans…
