I write quite a lot here on CharterWave about why it’s important for people booking charters to work with a reputable broker. We even devote a whole section of CharterWave to explaining exactly why you want to have a broker standing in between you and a yacht’s owner (and keeping an eye on your money, in particular).

One of the reputable brokers we have known for years, Ed Hamilton, has an interesting story posted in his company’s February newsletter about a person who learned the hard way that you should never book a yacht directly from its owner. Poor guy got all the way to Greece and had a miserable vacation because he skipped the simple, important step of calling a charter broker.
