Free Fuel, Anyone?

I received a promotional e-mail yesterday from Churchill Yacht Partners, which manages the 114-foot motoryacht Camille for charter. “What an opportunity!” the e-mail screamed. “FREE FUEL!”

Sounds like an unusual offer from a charter yacht, but in reality, this is just the first of what usually are more than a few yachts offering special deals and discounts as they reposition from summer charter grounds to winter charter areas. In Camille’s case, the yacht’s owner is moving her from New England down to Florida just after the Labor Day holiday. The idea is to entice a charter client into the unusual itinerary, with the free fuel being a nice price break along the way.

These kinds of shoulder season and repositioning deals are not always advertised, but reputable charter brokers know which yacht owners have a history of being willing to negotiate similar discounts.

If you’re thinking about chartering in early September, make sure you ask about possible options like free fuel on repositioning itineraries. Hey, you never know–you could end up saving a few thousand dollars off typical charter expenses.
