Same Size, Different Setup

The photo above is of the 47-foot sailing catamaran Genesis, which is brand-new to the Nicholson Yachts fleet in the Grenadines. What caught my attention about this yacht (whose crew I have yet to meet) is that she’s the same size as a lot of sailing cats that take six or even eight charter guests, but she’s being marketed far differently: as ideally accommodating a single couple.

Onboard Genesis, the entire right hull is laid out as a single guest suite, with a king-size bed and an oversized bathroom taking up the same space where similar-length sailing cats typically have at least two guest cabins. You can see what I mean by going to this page on the Nicholson website, clicking on “Genesis” to your left, and scrolling down to the bottom.

The layout is very cool stuff, indeed–and a reminder that when you’re trying to choose among charter yachts, size isn’t all that matters. Boats that are one or two feet apart in length can have far different accommodations layouts, not to mention far different qualities of crew, water toys, and more. Don’t ever assume that three 47-foot sailing cats are the same simply because they’re the same length. Or three 147-foot motoryachts, for that matter.

Genesis is available at a lowest weekly base rate of $7,900 for two guests, which includes meals onboard. Contact any reputable charter broker for more information.
