CharterPortBVI Gives Back

Virgin Islands Platinum News reported this week that CharterPortBVI, which manages a large fleet of crewed yachts in the Virgin Islands, has volunteered to serve as a sponsor for the Royal BVI Yacht Club’s summer sports camp. The charter company’s donation ensures that any local child age 6 or older will be able to participate in sailing and other activities, even if the child cannot afford the camp’s regular fee.

I’ll tell you, this is the kind of local “giving back” that I like to see. Yes, the charter industry brings a lot of tourism dollars into the Caribbean and Virgin Islands, but all those big, multimillion-dollar yachts can also sometimes seem, well, a bit “first world” when they arrive in “second world” ports where local people are struggling to earn a living.

When a company that is deeply involved in the local charter business, as CharterPortBVI is, decides to give back to the community, the donation can go a long way toward ensuring that locals see charter yachts as a welcome part of the community. And that’s a good thing for all of us who enjoy cruising in these waters from time to time.

Kudos to CharterPortBVI, then. Here’s hoping a few of those young sailors grow up to serve as top-notch charter yacht captains.
