First Impression: Snowbird
Date toured: May 2011
Snowbird is a 2010 build from Hakvoort that changed owners during the construction process. As soon as the 128-foot motoryacht launched, she went right back to the Dutch shipyard so the new owners could install the interior of their choice—a bright, modern-art showplace filled with colorful, limited edition prints.
Artists with work onboard include Roy Lichtenstein, Damien Hurst, Willem De Kooning, Jeff Koons, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, and Frank Stella. A great deal of Hermes orange is infused throughout the interior, too, matched alongside a light, sea-tone blue. Nobody could mistake Snowbird for a yacht with a traditional interior décor. She is modern and unique, almost bubbling over with color and light, and real fun for anyone with an interest in Modern American art.
The master cabin is forward on the main deck with a king-size bed that faces the bathroom. There is no door between the bed and the bathroom, where the tub is in open view and the toilet and shower are behind frosted glass. Also worth noting is the master cabin’s closet, which is upholstered in stingray skin.
Four additional cabins are belowdecks, off a corridor with mother-of-pearl walls and a floor covered in cow-hair carpeting. (It was softer beneath my bare feet than you might imagine.) There are two queen-bed cabins and two twin-bed cabins on this deck, all with white alligator paneling, French oak flooring, and glass fishbowl sinks.
On the upper decks, the sky lounge and sundeck are filled with fun spots. The bridge deck includes a custom-designed leather bar as well as a leather game-cube table that includes classic favorites such as Scrabble. The sundeck has a hot tub as well as shaded seating. Other guest areas aboard Snowbird include a drop-down swim platform that is known as a “teak beach.”
