Late-season Caribbean yacht charter deals, AYCA elects new leadership, refit of Victoria Del Mar

Late-Season Discounts on Caribbean Yacht Charter

Yacht owners in the Caribbean are trying to get every last charter onto the books that they can before the season ends in late March or early April. A number of good incentive deals have popped up in the past few weeks, aboard charter yachts of all sizes and styles:

Churchill Yacht Partners has the 130-foot Westport motoryacht Arioso with charter availability this month and in March across the whole of the Caribbean, from the British Virgin Islands down to the Grenadines–and with no delivery fees, no matter the destination. Edmiston and Company has the 235-foot Feadship motoryacht Utopia giving nine days of charter for the price of seven out of St. Bart’s. (The base rate is $435,000 for 12 guests with 17 crew.) CharterWorld says the 67-foot Victoria sailing catamaran LIR is dropping her weekly rates for the rest of the Caribbean season. (Previously, the weekly inclusive rates ranged from $34,000 to $40,000. Now, they are reduced to a range of $29,500 to $33,000.) Ocean Independence says the 181-foot Proteksan-Turquoise motoryacht Turquoise is giving as much as 30 percent off her regular weekly base rates from February through April, for Caribbean charters of seven to 10 days.

Any reputable charter broker can tell you more about any of these yachts or help you book a week aboard in the Caribbean while these deals remain in effect.

It Still Feels Like Winter, but Summer Charter is Top of Mind

CharterWave headquarters just outside of New York City is a winter wonderland, with snow covering the landscape and roaring fires keeping the office warm. But despite the fact that we’re in the depths of winter, charter yacht owners have summer on their minds. Many of them have already begun promoting their yachts for the annual kick-off events of the summer Mediterranean season: the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival.

Ocean Independence says the 120-foot Palmer Johnson motoryacht Escape II, which just completed an audiovisual systems refit, is open for both events. Edmiston and Company has the 142-foot ISA motoryacht Philmi open for all Mediterranean event charters. Ocean Drive is marketing the 85-foot Ferretti motoryacht Le Petit Bateau for event charters with 60 people aboard at the quay. Hill Robinson is marketing the 193-foot Austal motoryacht Idol, which can take 150 guests at the dock during the Monaco Grand Prix. Northrop and Johnson says the 147-foot Feadship motoryacht Harle is open for both the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival this spring, while Fraser Yachts Worldwide has the 183-foot Benetti motoryacht Ulysses (shown at right) open for events and able to take 150 guests at the quay.

The real trick to booking a Mediterranean event charter is not just scoring a great yacht, but also scoring a berth in port. Those tend to be gone at least a month or two ahead of prime events, so if you want to charter at the Monaco Grand Prix or Cannes Film Festival, then the best time to book is indeed within the next few weeks. Contact any reputable charter charter broker to learn more.

AYCA Elects New Leadership for 2016-17 Term

The American Yacht Charter Association, one of the world’s leading professional organizations for charter brokers, has just elected a new board of directors.

These industry leaders will serve for two years apiece, helping to mold contract law and other issues that affect charter clients on a daily basis.

Pictured from left to right: board member Diana Mares-Brody of Camper and Nicholsons International; Secretary Maggie Vale of Churchill Yacht Partners, Ethics Chair Gina Robertson of Fraser Yachts Worldwide; Bylaws Chair Crom Littlejohn of Northrop & Johnson; Membership Chair Molly Marston of Oyster Yacht Charter; Treasurer Steve McCrea of Ed Hamilton and Partners; President Beverly Parsons of Interpac Yachts; Nominating Committee Chair Robin O’Brien of Fraser Yachts Worldwide; and Vice President Kathleen Mullen of Regency Yacht Vacations.

Congratulations to all the new board members!

Mondango 3: Worth the Wait in the Caribbean and Mediterranean

Back in June 2014, CharterWave reported on the 185-foot Alloy sailing yacht Mondango 3, which had launched from the New Zealand shipyard and joined the charter fleet at Burgess Yachts. She was one of the most talked-about new yachts for charter in the world, even though precious few people had ever seen her in person. The owner kept her on that side of the world for more than a year, cruising aboard personally and offering her for charter in the South Pacific and Southeast Asia.

Mondango 3 is now enjoying her debut charter season in the Caribbean, and our editor had a chance to get aboard at the recent Antigua Charter Yacht Show.

Her thoughts? This yacht is worth the wait, every bit as beautiful and smartly built as would be expected from a charter yacht with this experienced owner.

The name Mondango 3 may seem familiar to CharterWave readers, as this yacht was built for the same owner who had the 169-foot Alloy Mondango in charter during the past several years. The new build was designed to enhance everything that worked well for charter aboard the original yacht, only in an even bigger and more luxurious package.

Great Refit: Delta Motoryacht Victoria Del Mar

The 164-foot Delta motoryacht Victoria Del Mar was one of our editor’s favorites at the recent Antigua Charter Yacht Show. She’s a 2006 build that previously was known as Happy Days, and she got a new owner in 2014. He invested in a nine-month refit of her interior and exterior, everything from the floors to the furniture to the outdoor shades. As Chief Stewardess Tronell Joubert told CharterWave editor during her tour, “It’s very South Beach, very contemporary.” Kim couldn’t agree more.

There’s a smart use of glass in the new interior decor. According to Joubert, a company called Chico made the stunning chandelier that hangs above the indoor dining table, which also has a glass top—unusual compared with the rich wood tables that are usually seen in this space on other motoryachts. The glass table is at once formal and playful, much like Victoria Del Mar herself. It reflects light off the huge windows throughout this space (as you can see in the adjacent main salon, in the photograph at right).

Forward of the dining space on the main deck are not one, but two VIP staterooms with queen-size beds, plus a gymnasium that can be used as a massage room. Four additional guest staterooms are belowdecks, all refit similarly to the rest of the yacht, while the master is aft on the bridge deck, overlooking the yacht’s stern and a private outdoor balcony.

An sky lounge amidships, adjacent to the master stateroom, can be used by all guests or as a private retreat for the principal charter guest, with two balconies offering yet more terrific water views. Of all the indoor spaces, this was our editor’s  favorite.
