Chartered Yacht Wins Top Honors at St. Barth’s Bucket
The 100-foot Nautor’s Swan sailing yacht Virago (shown in the photograph at right) won first place at the St. Barth’s Bucket, which was held March 24-27 in the Caribbean. Virago had been chartered specifically to race in the event. The yacht is managed for charter by Camper and Nicholsons International.
This was the second year in a row that charter yachts earned top honors at the Bucket. In 2011, first place went to the 136-foot, J-Class sailing yacht Ranger, which is part of the Northrop and Johnson charter fleet, while second place went to the 154-foot Perini Navi Andromeda la Dea, which is part of the charter fleet at Churchill Yacht Partners.
Seven Charter Yachts Cruise as Flotilla for Brokers in the Bahamas
Seven well-known charter yachts cruised as part of a six-day flotilla, from March 30 through April 4, to introduce international charter brokers to the Bahamas as a cruising destination.
The marketing tour comes at a challenging time for Bahamas yacht charter, which, according to the most recent statistics available, has seen a 60-percent decrease in business since the start of the global recession. Just 80 weeks of charter were booked in the Bahamas in 2009, compared with 195 weeks in 2007.
Fraser Yachts Worldwide Cites Signs of Market Recovery
Fraser Yachts Worldwide states in its most recent newsletter that the luxury yacht charter market appears to be turning the corner in the wake of the global economic recession.
“Clients from territories that have traditionally had a strong interest in chartering are returning once again,” the newsletter states, adding that two-thirds of this winter’s Caribbean clients were from the United States and Britain. The remaining third of clients for whom Fraser booked charters this past winter came from Russia, France, Italy, and Ireland.
Interestingly, the Fraser Yachts newsletter states that inquiries for charters in Mexico are higher than usual. No other exotic destinations are seeing a current surge in interest, the company states, with the primary area of demand being the long-popular Mediterranean for this coming summer.
Also worth noting from the new Fraser Yachts newsletter is that the company believes “the brokerage market has hit bottom.” Typically, the yacht charter and yacht brokerage markets go hand-in-hand, and both sank substantially in late 2008 along with the global economy. Fraser Yachts says that it saw steady growth in the brokerage market for 2010, in both the number and value of yachts sold, but that the growth was less significant than industry insiders had hoped.
YPI Group Creates YPI Asia, Opens Offices in Hong Kong, China
YPI Group has partnered with Olivier Besson, which has six years of experience in China’s luxury market, to open a new division called YPI Asia. The first two offices will be in Shenzhen, China, and Aberdeen, Hong Kong.
“It’s a great mix,” says Bertrand Vogèle, YPI Group’s chief executive officer. “YPI has almost 40 years’ specialized experience in superyachting. That’s a lot of expertise and know-how that’s invaluable to our Chinese contacts today. Olivier and his team have an amazing local know-how and an acute understanding of what our Asian clients are looking for, what they expect, and how they want to do business. Putting the two together will ensure our Asian clients receive nothing short of the very best service, advice, and know-how right on their doorstep.”
YPI Asia’s first public display was at the recent Hainan Rendez-Vous boat show, where they offered the 213-foot Benetti motoryacht Ambrosia for sale.
The Triton: Charter Brokers Help Yachts Book Nearly 75 Percent of All Charters
The widely read crew publication The Triton recently published this article with new statistics from charter yacht captains about how they believe the charter booking process works.
Respondents, who command yachts from 80 to 160 feet long, said that retail charter brokers are responsible for about 75 percent of bookings. About half of the captains surveyed said yacht owners expect them to work toward booking charters themselves, and about half of the captains also said that if they succeed in completing a booking on their own, they earn a bonus from the yacht’s owner. Nearly 80 percent of captains said they contact previous charter guests to solicit repeat business.
In terms of charter marketing, 80 percent of captains said their yachts either have their own websites or are promoted online by a charter management company. A smaller percentage said they felt boat shows were important for marketing a charter yacht, and a full third of captains said they do not attend boat shows at all.
About 50 charter yacht captains provided information for The Triton’s survey.
Budget Travel Magazine Features Sailing Catamaran Tachyon
Eric Stahl, who is the owner/captain aboard the 47-foot sailing catamaran Tachyon, sent CharterWave’s editor this image of the cover from the March 2011 issue of Budget Travel magazine.
CharterWave first covered Tachyon in 2006, which is the year that Stahl and his wife, Jacque, bought her and put her into the Virgin Islands charter scene. They made a great impression at that year's Tortola charter yacht show, and when our editor interviewed Eric Stahl again in early 2007, it was clear that the yacht was already beginning to realize its potential.
Tachyon has since gone on to earn a strong reputation with charter brokers and a healthy base of repeat clients throughout the Caribbean. It’s great to see a well-run charter yacht getting a new boost with nationwide publicity in America just a few years after entering the charter business.
Late-April Transatlantic Sailing Yacht Charter Opportunity
The 62-foot sailing yacht Anahita is offering a pair of unusual, transatlantic charter opportunities for just two guests apiece at the end of April.
The first option is to board Anahita in the Northern Caribbean or Virgin Islands, with embarkation choices of St. Thomas, Sint Maarten, or Antigua. Guests will then sail aboard Anahita across the Atlantic Ocean to Gibraltar with a three-day stop in the Azores. This experience is expected to take 30 days total, and the cost is $5,000 per guest, which includes everything except liquor. Food will be served aboard the yacht while she is at sea, of course, but during the three days in Gibraltar, only breakfast will be served aboard.
Then, at the end of May, Anahita’s second opportunity for two guests becomes available. The yacht will sail from Gibraltar to Montenegro with no stops in between. This 11-day experience is being offered at a rate of $3,000 per guest, again including all meals but not liquor.
Anahita is a 1991 Dynamique designed by noted naval architect Philippe Briand. She was refit in 2009 and will be undergoing maintenance in Trinidad just before the first leg of her upcoming transatlantic journey.
Chance to Charter at Singapore Grand Prix in September
The Singapore Grand Prix, while not nearly as well-known to yacht charter aficionados as the Monaco Grand Prix, is organized similarly in terms of waterfront geography. The route that the Formula 1 race cars follow is so close to the local marinas that it is called the Marina Bay Circuit, making it an ideal event to attend by way of a chartered yacht.
This year’s Singapore Grand Prix is scheduled to take place September 23-25. Ocean Independence says the 138-foot sailing catamaran Douce France is going to be available for charter during the event without any relocation fees.
The owner of Douce France is offering a special, five-day base rate of €80,000 for the event. That includes overnight accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins.
Charter Yacht Chef Continues Relief Effort in Christchurch. In March, the superyacht community in Auckland, New Zealand, held a fund-raiser to assist the people in Christchurch, which was devastated by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in late February. Hamish Watson, a Christchurch native who serves as chef aboard the 183-foot Benetti motoraycht Galaxy, was asked to speak at the event. He recently sent CharterWave the following update on what he has seen and experienced in Christchurch following the fund-raiser, as he has been cooking lunches and dinners for 150 to 200 rescue workers a day… Read more…

Motoryacht of the Month: VvS1
The 111-foot Alloy motoryacht VvS1 offers expedition-style charters filled with scuba diving and big-game fishing in remote destinations.
CharterWave editor Kim Kavin sampled the yacht's features during a week of cruising in Fiji, where she encountered everything from 10-foot manta rays to dancing natives.
”We spent one afternoon on Nacula Island in the Yasawas, at a village overlooking Malakati Bay where the tribespeople performed a meke—a traditional dance presentation,” Kim recalls. “We sat cross-legged as drums banged, voices chanted, and dancers in grass skirts told visual stories about their lives. I got to be our group’s chief, which meant that I sat in the middle and received a few sips of kava, the local equivalent of Greek ouzo or Scotch whiskey, as the village’s offer of welcome.”
Read more about the unique charter experience that VvS1 offers in the Fiji in our newly posted crewed charter review. (The yacht also has availability in New Zealand.)
Sailing Yacht of the Month: Matau
Matau is a Privilege 75 sailing catamaran that offers charters for six or eight guests. CharterWave editor Kim Kavin spent a week onboard in the Southern Caribbean, sailing from the island of St. Vincent south through the Grenadines to the island of Grenada.
“My favorite part of the charter was in the Tobago Cays,” Kim says. “Be sure to request a beach barbecue when your charter yacht anchors there. I moseyed up the sand during sunset at Petit Bateau, with Matau anchored not 50 yards away, and meandered into a grove of trees where a pair of locals who call themselves Scrappy and Scrum were broiling what they promised would be the best lobster I’d ever tasted. As they showed me their fixings for potatoes, rice, and salad, Matau’s crew were back at the beach covering picnic tables with cloth and candles, and making sure our beer and wine were chilled. I tore into my first juicy lobster tail as the stars came out, letting my feet dangle from the picnic bench like a giddy child.”
Capt. James Prince wanted to be a windsurfing instructor but ended up with a career in sailing instead. He's now in command of the 90-foot sailing yacht Atalante, which is the only Truly Classic 90 model on the water.
“A lot of our charter clients are people who are interested in buying a boat like her,” he says. “They really want to put her through her paces. We only take four guests, which is a small number for a yacht in our size range. With three crew, we can offer an excellent standard of service, and the boat just feels huge.”
Read more about Prince’s background and the charter experience offered aboard Atalante in our exclusive captain interview.
Chef of the Month: Lizzie Hall
Chef Lizzie Hall of the 130-foot Christensen motoryacht Sweet Escape impressed our editor during a luncheon in Antigua with a scallop appetizer served alongside shiitake mushrooms, crab, and lobster.
“I like to use a mix of Pacific-style ingredients like fish, lean meats, vegetables, and low-carb foods,” Hall says. “But my desserts, well… Dessert is my favorite. It’s the big finish at the end. I don’t worry about carbs when it comes to desserts. I love to make homemade ice cream and chocolate lava cake and mohito sorbet and raspberry coulis. Did I mention chocolate? I love to cook with chocolate for the guests.”
Learn more about Hall’s cooking background and the way she prepares food for charter guests in our exclusive chef interview.
“I moved to South Florida to be in ladies’ retail clothing,” Blackburn recalls with a chuckle. “It took me about five minutes to run screaming from that industry, and I went to work for Broward Marine. From there, I took a job with Bob Offer at his company, Offer and Associates. That was in 1992. I’ve been with Fraser Yachts since 1997. I have no desire to work anywhere else. I’m still very happy here.”
Learn more about Blackburn—and the charter deal that once left her standing with $10,000 cash on a dark airport runway at 2 a.m. in the Caribbean—in our exclusive broker interview.
