CharterWave editor Kim Kavin spent two days at last month's 2011 Newport Charter Yacht Show in Rhode Island, including one morning as a featured speaker at a gathering of the American Yacht Charter Association.
“Despite the nasty weather and downpours, there were several dozen top-notch charter brokers touring yachts on the docks,” Kim says. “While the Newport show is one of the smaller annual charter shows, it was great to see such a strong showing of brokers as well as a good number of interesting yachts that still have availability this summer in New England.”
The talk of the show is what is known in the industry as a “character boat,” one that is unique in terms of design and memorable for her unusual features. Her name is Red Head, and she’s a 65-foot Florida Bay Coaster that’s part of the charter fleet at Neptune Group Yachting. Red Head (shown in the photograph at right) was previously owned by singer Billy Joel, who turned her main salon into an Irish pub. Her new owner has given her a complete makeover that is being marketed as “Nantucket beach house,” and she had lots of buzz on the docks thanks to both her schnazzy new decor and her all-smiles crew.
“For me,” Kim says, “stepping aboard Red Head brought back great memories about the last Florida Bay Coaster that was available for charter, a 60-footer called Irony that has long since left the industry. I think Red Head will make a lot of charter clients happy during the upcoming season in New England.”
The largest yacht at this year’s Newport show was the 154-foot Admiral Marine motoryacht Ohana, which is part of the Northrop and Johnson charter fleet. She served her role as flagship well, looking fresh and clean inside with new features to promote including a 37-foot towed Intrepid tender and no fewer than four brand-new Wave Runners.
“I spent an afternoon enjoying a private lunch onboard with the captain,” Kim says, “and I learned that Ohana got a new owner and all-new crew this past winter. The name of the yacht is the same, but the rest of the operation is new. They did a great job with my luncheon, and the yacht appears to have a bright future for charter.”
Also receiving a good deal of buzz at the show was the 123-foot Palmer Johnson motoryacht Muse, whose chef won first prize in cooking competition. She prepared spring rolls with pickled cucumber and radish salad, showcasing the culinary skills she learned while traveling in Vietnam. Muse is part of the Burgess Yachts charter fleet.
World’s Largest Sailing Catamaran Prepares to Launch, Enter Charter Market
Burgess Yachts recently announced that, at long last, the 145-foot sailing catamaran Hemisphere has commenced sea trials in the United Kingdom in anticipation of delivery from Pendennis Shipyard. When the owner officially takes delivery in late July, Hemisphere will become the largest sailing catamaran in the world, as well as the largest available for charter.
The yacht was originally known as Gemini and, back in 2008, was scheduled to be delivered from Derecktor Shipyards in the United States. Construction delays ensued until late 2009, when Pendennis won the contract to complete the build and the partially completed yacht was moved across the Atlantic by way of a container ship.
After she launches this summer, Hemisphere will be used exclusively by the owner in the Mediterranean. The yacht will then will move to the Caribbean for her inaugural season of charter this winter. She will take 10 to 12 guests in five cabins, with a crew of eight, at a lowest weekly base rate of €175,000.
Following the 2011-12 winter charter season, Hemisphere is expected to transit the Panama Canal bound for a summer 2012 season of cruising in the South Pacific.
The photograph at right, courtesy of Burgess, shows Hemisphere as she stood near completion in the shipyard. Here is how the management company is describing the yacht overall: “Hemisphere boasts a spacious flybridge with Jacuzzi, sunpads and shaded dining along with a vast indoor/outdoor living area on the main deck. Michael Leach Design’s relaxed, elegant interior is the epitome of contemporary chic, and the yacht’s exceptional volume offers a high degree of luxury without a trace of glitz. Dark wood floors are offset by a soothing neutral color palette with innumerable customized touches such as 17 different types of granite and 16 leather finishes, creating an ‘island living meets deluxe Pacific Rim' ambience.”
Hemisphere is expected to be one of the most in-demand yachts available for charter during the winter 2011-12 season in the Caribbean. Contact any reputable charter broker to become one of the first clients to book a vacation aboard the world's largest luxury catamaran.

CharterWave Audience Reaches New Milestone
CharterWave is now averaging about 6,500 unique visitors per month, its largest audience since launching in October 2006, according to Google Analytics.
The audience continues to reinforce CharterWave’s position as one of the world’s leading editorial brands in the world of luxury yacht charter. By comparison, Boat International Media claims a total of 8,500 paid subscribers for its magazines Showboats International, Boat International, Meer & Yachten, Mer & Bateaux, Boat International China, and Boat International Russia.
“It’s a real thrill to see CharterWave establishing a reach that is now just 25 percent shy of all paid subscribers for many of the world’s premier megayacht magazines, combined,” says CharterWave editor Kim Kavin. “And we’re still growing every day. Our primary readership base is in the United States, but the top ten countries where CharterWave reaches readers every month include the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Italy, Australia, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece, and Germany.”
CharterWave also remains the best value for advertisers who want to tap into the world’s luxury yacht charter audience. With monthly advertising rates as low as $50, CharterWave makes it possible for reputable companies of virtually any size and budget to reach a top-quality audience worldwide.
"Luxury yacht charter has always been a small niche in the broader yachting industry," Kim says. "The fact that the CharterWave audience is so large compared with paid subscribers for top magazines covering all aspects of yachting is a true testament to the power of great editorial content being presented in a smart way online."

Motoryacht of the Month: Apache II
The 144-foot Baglietto motoryacht Apache II can take 10 or 12 overnight guests, but she's also built to accommodate parties of as many as 100 people at the dock.
“We are a party boat as well as a family boat,” a stewardess told CharterWave editor Kim Kavin during an onboard tour in Italy. “We’ve had young, Russian clients who like to have big events, and we had 12 nights with parties on the dock last year in Cannes, France. We are ready for those kinds of charter clients, as well as for families who want a more relaxed experience.”
The 153-foot sailing yacht Roxane, which launched in 2010 from the Su Marine shipyard in Turkey, is without question one of the prettiest and most unique sailing yachts to enter the luxury charter market in recent years.
The owner doesn’t like for her to be called a gulet (a traditional motorsailer in Turkey), but Roxane does have that aura about her at first glance, with a wide beam of 28 feet and a layout that includes gulet-style seating both forward and aft of the raised salon on deck. She’s also built of Kenyan mahogany and Iroko teak, woods that are from the same families often used to build gulets in Turkey.
That, however, is where any resemblance to a traditional gulet ends. Roxane’s sleek, black hull and modern Zen interior give her a level of contemporary beauty that is hard to find aboard a sailing yacht of any kind, including aboard the performance cruisers from which Roxane takes some of her design elements.
Capt. Brad Momsen offers guests everything from a huge water slide to personalized scuba lessons aboard the 161-foot Trinity motoryacht Glaze, which he joined in November 2010. (That's the sundeck hot tub and bar aboard Glaze in the photograph at right.)
“From December 2009 through March 2011, there was a refit of all soft goods onboard, all throughout the interior,” Momsen says. “We also got new carpet, window treatments, and furniture. She’s essentially a brand-new boat for charter, even though the build is a few years old. We didn’t do any charters this past winter, so summer 2011 in the Mediterranean will be our first full season on the market as Glaze.”
Annette Arpon isn't a fan of heavy sauces. Instead, she specializes in light Mediterranean, Asian, vegetarian, and macrobiotic cuisine aboard the 93-foot Maiora motoryacht Asha.
“I have been working aboard Asha since she launched in 2006,” Arpon says. “Most of the guests really like my stir fry, especially when I prepare it with beef. I also like to cook lobster on the grill. Sauces, I make well, but I always serve them on the side so that people can choose how much to have. And most of our guests do not want a lot of desserts. They are too full from all of the healthy, good food.”
Longtime charter broker Gina Robertson of Yachtstore recently returned from the Marmaris Charter Yacht Show during her first-ever visit to the cruising grounds in Southwestern Turkey. She was impressed with many of the luxury gulets that still have charter availability this summer.
“There were 56 boats in the show, and the quality really surprised me,” she says. “Of the ones that I saw, maybe 36 of them, they were almost all four-star and five-star. I found far more boats than I thought I could recommend to clients. I expected the quality to be far, far lower, but it was really quite high.”
Learn about the charter yachts that Robertson is currently recommending to all of her top charter clients visiting Turkey in our newly posted interview about the 2011 Marmaris Charter Yacht Show.
