One of the things I noticed while touring the gorgeous 178-foot sailing yacht Tiara at this month’s Antigua charter show is that each cabin had headphones on display, as shown in the photograph above. If the cabin was meant to sleep two people, there were two headphones. Three beds, three headphones.
First mate Brendan Crawford told me that the wireless headphones are connected to the audiovisual system that the yacht’s owner upgraded in 2005. The idea is that if one person in a guest cabin is sleeping, another person in that cabin can still enjoy the high-definition flat screens and Crestron control system at full blast. There are no concerns about noise bothering guests in adjacent cabins, either.
What a great idea. Virtually all top-dollar charter yachts now have the kinds of audiovisual systems that practically beg you to crank up the volume, but few yachts have put any thought into how distracting those systems can be to guests who are trying to read a book, take a nap, or simply enjoy the sounds of the sea. Headphones like these are a terrific solution–and a relatively inexpensive solution, too, that could be adopted on charter yachts at all price points.
Tiara is part of the fleet at Edmiston & Company. Any reputable charter broker can tell you more about her amenities, or help you book a week onboard.
