Megayacht Yogi Sinks in Greece PDF Print E-mail

Several leading European websites are reporting that the 204-foot Proteksan-Turquoise motoryacht Yogi sank this morning off the coast of Skyros, Greece.

According to Superyacht.com and SuperyachtTimes.com, Yogi experienced mechanical failure around 7:30 a.m. local time. Sea conditions were Force 8 on the Beaufort Scale, which measures wind and waves on a scale of 1 to 12. That means winds around 35 to 40 knots, and waves about 20 to 25 feet high (which may or may not be true, based on the visuals coming in so far). The captain told at least one reporter that there was a problem with Yogi's engines. The yacht was in the shipyard earlier this week for warranty work.

The Hellenic Coast Guard responded to the scene with helicopters that transported all guests and crew to safety. The following video appears to have been shot from one of those helicopters:

Yogi is a celebrated new charter yacht that launched about a year ago from the Proteksan-Turquoise shipyard in Turkey. Her most recent honors include being named just last month as a finalist in the 2012 World Superyacht Awards for best motoryacht in her size range, and being named the Yachts Magazine 2011 Most Innovative Yacht of the Year.

Yogi even made it beyond the marine press and into the general media, which is rare for a superyacht. She was featured in Forbes magazine this past July, and television satirist Stephen Colbert showed Yogi's swimming pool during a comedy bit called "Wealth Under Siege."

I was onboard Yogi in May 2011, when she was among the favorite new yachts at the Genoa charter show. Many charter brokers heralded the launch as among the finest entries into the global charter market for the entire year. I, too, loved the boat and featured her as a CharterWave Motoryacht of the Month.

Burgess Yachts originally marketed Yogi for charter at a lowest weekly base rate of €357,000 for 12 guests. As of this writing, the yacht has been removed from the Burgess website.
