Christie's auction house in New York City is making news today with its third-annual Bid to Save the Earth, a "green auction" intended to raise money for leading environmental nonprofits worldwide. One of the items up for bid is a week-long charter donated by the owner of the 145-foot Pendennis sailing catamaran Hemisphere.

The regular weekly base rate to charter Hemisphere for 12 guests is $245,000, according to management company Burgess Yachts. Christie's will add whatever amount today's auction brings to the nearly $5 million that the event has raised for environmental groups during the past two years.

Hemisphere is currently the world's largest luxury sailing catamaran for charter. I was onboard Hemisphere just a few months ago, when she was one of my favorite new builds at the 2011 Antigua Charter Yacht Show. That's where I snapped the photograph at right, of her gorgeous mosaic sundeck hot tub.

I also happened to see Hemisphere just a few weeks ago in the British Virgin Islands, where she was showing off her sexy new sportfishing tender.
