Tai Ping carpet on Darlings DanamaIt appears that Tai Ping is the hot new thing.

The three most talked-about, brand-new megayachts on the docks here at the 2012 Genoa Charter Yacht Show are the 196-foot CRN Darlings Danama, the 242-foot Nobiskrug Mogambo, and the 255-foot Abeking and Rasmussen Amaryllis. I can't tell you what's onboard Amaryllis because media are being denied access unless we agree to reveal nothing to readers (which as you know is not how my job works), but having toured Darlings Danama yesterday and Mogambo today, I can tell you for sure that Tai Ping silk carpeting is a new trend in megayacht floor decor.

I snapped the photograph at right under admittedly low lighting in the main salon aboard Darlings Danama, whose purser told me that the carpet is not only a silk Tai Ping, but that the silk was hand-shaved to look like ripples on a sandy beach. She suggested that I look up the pricing online; my best guess is about $200 per square yard. The stuff felt great under my sock-covered feet, like actual ripples on a sandy beach. I couldn't help but wonder what happens if red wine gets spilled, but I guess if your charter yacht garners a weekly base rate of €345,000, you can afford to refinish the floors when need be.

No photos are being allowed aboard Mogambo, but I saw very similar rippled Tai Ping carpeting there today. The ripples seemed closer together, if that somehow affects the pricing. I'm guessing it's not a major factor for her owner, either, with Mogambo's weekly base rate having been set at €650,000.

According to online sources, Tai Ping carpeting is also found in Buckingham Palace, Monte Carlo casinos, and the offices of Goldman Sachs. I'll keep an eye out here in Genoa this week for any more sightings aboard luxury charter yachts.

If you'd like to charter Darlings Danama, she's with Camper and Nicholsons International. Mogambo is listed for charter with Hill Robinson. Any reputable charter broker can help you book a week onboard either yacht.

More from the docks in Genoa tomorrow...
