First Impression: Sabore

Date toured: November 2006

Update, November 2007: Sabore was named "Best in Show" at the Totola charter yacht show. Mike and Lori Cady are now splitting their time onboard with a second team, Capt. Colin and Penny Moors, previously of the 57-foot sailing catamaran Ad Astra. Each team will work six months on, six months off. The Cadys will have summers off to spend in their home state of Washington, and the Moors will have winters off to spend at their home of England.

The 58-foot sailing catamaran Sabore was voted best-in-show at the 2005 Tortola event, so new crew Mike and Lori Cady had their work cut out for them when they arrived in 2006 to try to wow the same group of charter industry insiders.
     They started by passing out a flyer that asks, “How do you improve a nearly perfect charter boat?” and then goes on to list all the improvements that have been made to Sabore during the past year. They include a new dinghy, a new barbecue grill, a new satellite TV system “for sports addicts,” a new DVD movie projector for outdoor film night under the stars, a boatwide WiFi network with high-speed Internet access, a new large-screen plasma television in the main saloon, new Swedish Temporpedic mattresses in all four guest cabins (two king size, two queen size), and all new 600-thread count sheets.
     Oh, and write a 200-plus-page cookbook to hand out to your charter guests who rave about Lori’s cooking.
     Talk about going the extra mile! I was very impressed with Sabore, which more than one reputable charter broker insisted I check out for CharterWave’s readers (that’s a good sign; the buzz tells me the charters actually go well outside of the boat shows).
     I was also impressed with the variety of recipes featured in Lori’s “Cook Like the Wind,” which covers everything from seafood platters to snacks and hors d’oeuvres. “If you look at the recipes, it’s a lot of things people haven’t had before,” she explained to me as we sat in the main saloon. “It’s a whole week [during charter], so you want it to be varied, but also things that people want to eat. For instance, there’s no lamb. Lamb bothers some people.”
     Those kinds of comments only added to my excellent first impression of Sabore, telling me that this is not just a well-organized and nicely maintained yacht, but that its new crew are eager to please. They even made sure to point out the dual water makers they have onboard, both of which are necessary to keep water flowing into the spa jet showers in every one of the four guest cabins (something I’ve never before seen on a sailing catamaran of this size).
     Sabore is part of the CharterPortBVI fleet. Her weekly all-inclusive rate for two to four guests is $19,500; for six guests, $21,500;  and for eight guests, $23,500 (just shy of $3,000 per person with a  full boat).
