"There is so much hype these days about "going green". Turn on the TV or radio and at least 3 out of 5 advertisements seem to be about living more "green". What a laugh!! My husband Dan and I have lived "green" our whole life together. Back in the 70's, most of the American population called us hippies or tree huggers for doing so. Now it is all the rage. We have always preferred wearing natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, denim and raw silks in favor of polyester, rayon or the new micro-suede fabrics. Dan has always planted and grown an organic garden when his busy schedule away from his boat allows him the time to do so. Our sheets are natural cotton as are our towels. Our cats eat what we eat a good portion of the time and we just lost our favorite last year at the age of 19 years old, that is approximately 105 in kitty years. We use regular gas in our vehicles not hi-test and we ride together whenever possible to save fuel or ride our motorcycles. Our cleaning and laundry products are enviromentally friendly and our clothes would not know what a bottle of clorox smells like. Our boats have always been scrubbed with eco-friendly, phosphate free soaps and Dan will not even let his stewardess bring bleach onboard the charter yacht that he operates. We ride bicycles up to the beach or walk instead of driving and then we clean up any trash that we find as we stroll along. Our new home presently under construction is built of 6" & 8" foam block construction filled with solid concrete with an r-factor rating of 22-25 for self insulating properties. Even our blown-in insulation for the attic is formulated from renewable agricultural resources such as corn and soy bean oil that contains no CFCs, HCFCs, VOCs or formaldehyde. We prefer fresh air over a/c and anxiously await and crave the days in Florida when the temperature drops enough to be able to shut the air conditioning down for months at a time. We are spending the extra bucks for energy saving impact windows and doors and have also ordered all Dark Sky Compliant flourescent exterior lights, tankless gas hot water heaters, energy star appliances and have hopeful plans to install a solar powered outdoor shower. So, at the middle of my life, I find it very humourous that most of the rest of the nation is "just getting it". Just think of the progress that we could have made if everyone the whole nation had been hippies or tree huggers! Seriously, we can all do our part to help and the following links will give you some ideas of how you can personally reduce the impact that you have on this earth. It is all that we have and we must protect it! Thanks for reading. greenliving.suite101.com/ www.thegreenguide.com/ www.green-living.com/ "
