Fish Schools

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

Well, we took advantage of the southern winds pushing the bait against the southern drop just 3nms from the yachts anchored position. We hooked up soon after we started trolling around some birds. We have a waypoint that we run to and often locate birds and some action close by. This time we scored two Mahi-Mahis. One of the fish weighed in over twenty pounds. We also had a large pod of small dolphin around us and always a few dolphins that road our bow-wake at arms reach in front of the tender. The group had a great time with a lot of constant action. The cameras were never put away.

I taught our deck-hand Dustin a way that I believe is great when cutting up the fillet portions for our guests. It is important that the fish are fillet to the caliber that a chef will want to use in their meals. Presentation is always important as well as not having any bones or dark color meat while still yielding the maximum amount per fillet. A crewmember can become a chef’s buddy if they know how to perform this process well. I have probably fillet more than two hundred fish for our chef Shaun (Shaun has his great share as well) in his five years aboard. Mahi, Grouper, Wahoo, Tunas, Snapper, don’t forget Lobsters & Conche and more. These are skills that will always benefit a charter. Also, how to rig your baits, make them swim correctly, how far to troll them behind the boat. Just write to me and I will give you the simple hints and tips. There are many ways to easily improve your chances because it is called fishing and not catching. There are many variations that you will hear so, always keep an open mind & just learn a method and improve on it yourself.

On board the CHARISMA we might have a daily activity list that involves Diving, fishing, Snorkeling, watersport, etc. There isn’t a lot of time that can be spent on prep work for baits & rigs as well as prep a freshly caught fish in time for a really fresh dinner. Over the years we have learned from world-class anglers tricks & techniques that seem to produce the best numbers & outcomes. Then we have worked it into a less time consuming, managable process. Hey, we aren’t experts at everything & spontaneity is one of the many, great reasons to charter your own yacht. Trust me, there are so many things to remember from the very start with your baits to the dinner plate.

Anyway, there will be more posts that I have to type from last week. We had a pretty eventful trip with guests on board. Also, I am going to learn how to publish photos very soon. I am sure that it is very simple but I need to get these photos up on this blog. It is easy to say that we caught a 20+lb mahi though the pictures are more impressive and believable. The length of the fish is almost four feet and only a photo can show you that!

Good luck to all those anglers,   Jared & the crew aboard the CHARISMA.

Many Choices

It is April and the Caribbean is perfect! The Charisma crew love chartering this month. The winds are normally @12-15 knots, sun is always shining and the seas are typically calmer.  We have all the toys (wave runners, sailboat, water-sports gear, etc) in the water. The boss isn’t sure which activity he will decide on and how to plan his day. There are also a possible offshore fishing excursion, snorkel trip, scuba diving & beach combing. It is possible to offer every activity and ammenity on board in the early spring.

The temperatures here are in the mid to upper eighties and a sea surface temp at or above eighty degrees. Not too bad after reading this mornings weather report in the US.

My boss asked me if the fronts (current weather) in the US will effect us down here. I said sure; when a front comes off the US it typically cancels our normal trades and we have calmer winds as well as improves our weather condition causing us to have few clouds and picture perfect anchorages.

It is nice for our guests to choose & plan their day as they please. No time limits on the toys. No long lines to wait in for their turn. I think we all get the point.

Jared.

Last Minute.

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Good Day, This my first entry as well as my very first blog. I hope to entice visitors of this blog as well as allow readers to join along with me vicariuosly through our travels. This should get interesting as we transit from the Caribbean to the Bahamas during May and now it is time to take advantage of special locations during our last few trips before we leave for the season.

We (charisma crew) had picked up a last minute charter for the holiday weekend. When I say last minute I mean one day to prepare and I will add that we were more than ready for their arrival.

Without a proper itinerary set we steamed off for our Virgin Island adventure. With a quick discussion up on the bridge, I was informed to find quiet and out of the way anchorages where they could have it all, such as; diving, snorkeling & water sports. This was a fun challenge for me as any Caribbean destination are always more populated with cruising vessels over the Holiday weekend. Basically, I was able to stretch my legs as one would say & I was actually told by my charter guest that he could not believe that a yacht our size could do what we had accomplished in some of our anchoring strategies. This comment is from a multiple charterer in the industry.

I would like to thank the brokers  of C&N, our management as well as my crew for a professional & accelerated completion of this trip from start to finish.                       thanks to all, Capt. Jared
